MIRAGE

Street #27, Wat Bo Village, Sala Kamreuk Commune,

Siem Reap, Cambodia

17254

Overview

Mirage is a new art space, shared open studio and cafe located in Siem Reap, Cambodia that aims to promote visual arts and many other art forms. Thanks to the collaborative effort of several artists based in Siem Reap, we, as a cooperative, are trying to expand our territories and create bridges between local, regional and international art communities.

Why a street photography exhibition in Siem Reap?

The exhibition will be curated by Serey Siv, a street and social documentary photographer and co-founder of Mirage, and Michelle Rice Chan, a street photographer and independent curator based in Hong Kong. As Cambodia is still reeling from the disastrous regime that occurred in the late 70s, we believe that the act of partaking in street photography activities is a marvelous way for the Cambodian society to heal itself—especially since most street photographers are passionate shooters that tend to capture the comical, the nonsensical, the intimate, the raw, the colorful and the “decisive” moments of everyday life.

In this digital era, the current generation of photographers rarely develops or prints their own photographs. Some rely exclusively on social media applications and other trending digital platforms to promote their work. In Cambodia, where photography is not widely considered an art form, the number of photographers who care about having physical copies of their work is almost nonexistent. Mirage believes this exhibition can leave a positive impact on the emerging Khmer photography and art scene.

Why should I submit my street photos?

Our objective at Mirage is to foster the next generation of photographers, emerging artists, and curators in Siem Reap. In order to achieve this, we need to promote a more pragmatic and hands-on approach with the local art community.

By submitting your street photograph, you will be giving a unique opportunity to the youth and art community in Siem Reap. Under the supervision of the main curators and other artists at Mirage, we will let a young group of Siem Reap based artists handle your photographic prints. On the opening night of “Innocence” (Nov. 17, 2017), we will live stream the show on Facebook and Patreon, and watch these children and teenagers curate their first photo exhibition. Our wish is for every one of them to understand the underlying magic behind picking and touching a physical print, and the joy of curating an exhibition.

Since the exhibition will go on for roughly one month (Nov. 17 to Dec. 13, 2017), it will also coincide with the Angkor Photo Festival, the longest running photo festival in Asia (Dec. 3-12). Every year for the past 13 years, award-winning photographers and curators from all around the world gather in great numbers to attend the festival in Siem Reap. This is a great opportunity for some emerging photographers to get exposure.

Can I earn from print sales?

Every participating photographer will earn a commission from their print sales but you are not obligated to put them on sale. Mirage takes a 25% commission, 25% will be donated to a local Cambodian NGO that supports Siem Reap based artists and 50% will go to the artist (more details below).
